Does Printify Combine Shipping on Multiple Items?

Sometimes, and the answer depends entirely on whether every item in the order is a Printify Choice product. If it is, you get one shipping charge structure no matter how many facilities end up printing it. If it is not, you can pay full shipping twice on a single order.

This is the part that quietly eats margin, because the split happens after the customer has already paid you whatever your store charged them for shipping.

When Every Item is a Printify Choice Product

Printify’s system tries to group the whole order into one fulfilment location. When it cannot, it splits the order across locations, and this is the important part: Printify states that “shipping prices will always follow the first-item plus next-item rule, ensuring you are never charged more than expected.”

So the split still happens, but the extra cost is not on you. Printify Choice shipping starts at $4.29 for the first item and $2.09 for each additional one, and that structure holds even when three different facilities are printing the order.

Read the footnote on that promise though: it applies only to Printify Choice products within the order.

When the Order Contains Anything Else

Here the older rule still applies. Printify’s shipping documentation puts it plainly: “when products differ significantly in type, size, or are fulfilled by different providers, the full shipping rate will apply to each product individually.”

A mixed cart is the trap. One Printify Choice t-shirt and one product you assigned to a specific provider yourself is not one order with a shipping discount, it is two shipments with two first item charges. The customer sees one order, and your Printify integration might charge the customer combined shipping, but you’d pay higher shipping fees. This is something you have to test on your store to avoid losing money. Another thing is, you have to religiously follow Printify’s updates. If their policies change, your math stops mathing.

The Same Provider Gotcha Most Sellers Miss

Even inside a single print provider, the reduced additional item rate only applies to items of the same product type. Printify’s own examples are worth knowing before you build a bundle:

  • Men’s t-shirt plus women’s t-shirt: first item plus additional item, the discount applies
  • Men’s hoodie plus women’s hoodie: first item plus additional item, the discount applies
  • Men’s hoodie plus kids’ hoodie: first item plus first item, no discount at all
  • Canvases in the same size group: discount applies. Different size groups: no discount

An adult hoodie and a kids’ hoodie from the same printer are charged as two separate first items. If you sell family matching sets, you should run through an order process on your own store to see the shipping rates for yourself.

What Actually Causes an Order to Split

Printify lists three causes, and the first one is a setting you control:

  • The order contains a non Printify Choice item and Order Routing is switched off in your store settings
  • A print provider is temporarily out of stock or having technical trouble with a specific variant
  • The order contains variants that only certain providers can produce

Turn On Order Routing

This is the fix, and it is off until you enable it. Order Routing reduces production and shipping costs by consolidating an order with a single provider where that is possible, and it reroutes around out of stock items instead of letting the sale fail.

Three things worth knowing before you switch it on:

  • You can cap it. There is a maximum additional cost per item setting, and you choose whether it may substitute similar products or exact matches only
  • It will not reroute if the total of production plus shipping would exceed what the original provider charged, so it cannot quietly make an order more expensive
  • Your design may be scaled by up to 7% to fit another provider’s print area. Beyond that it will not route at all

You cannot manually include or exclude specific providers under Order Routing. You set the rules and the system picks.

What This Means for How You Price

The shipping figures in the tables on this page are single item rates, which is what a first order from a new customer almost always is. Once someone buys two things, your real cost depends on which of the cases above you are in, and the gap between the best case and the worst case is larger than most sellers’ entire margin on the second item.

These shipping rules sit on top of the supplier costs themselves. For what each blank costs before shipping enters the picture, see what print on demand actually costs.
